Braille-Related Sites

This section contains sites about braille, as well as places where you can purchase braille books and other items.

Bumpy Pages sells braille and large print products, including greeting cards, restaurant menus, business cards, doggie announcements, labels, documents, adjustable bookmarks and dedication CD’s.
If you're looking for high-quality braille books at affordable prices, check out BrailleBookstore.com. This site allows you to purchase books for children and adults, as well as items like buttons, calendars, magnets, etc. Almost all the items in their gift shop can be personalized with braille messages. Also, don't forget to visit their sister site, MarvelSoft, creators of Talking Typing Teacher, Talking Toolbox, and other programs.
Another great place to buy braille books is National Braille Press. In addition to hardcopy braille books, you can also purchase almost all of their books in PortaBook format, which is a text file of the book written in electronic braille.
Speaking of electronic braille books, The International Electronic Braille Library has many books in this format that can be downloaded for free. Also, be sure to check out The International Braille Research Center for more information about braille.
Everything Braille is a site operated by National Braille Press. It features links to educational materials about braille, as well as lists of adaptive braille products, including printers, displays, etc.

A note about electronic braille books: you'll need a refreshable braille display to read books in this format, as they'll sound garbled when read by a speech synthesizer.

Bill Sparks' OTR Store Another excellent resource to purchase old-time radio shows.

The Twilight Zone on Radio Features radio adaptations of various episodes of the Twilight Zone TV series. You can find a listing of stations carrying this program, and order various episodes on CDs and cassettes. Audio samples are also available.

Alien Worlds An impressive audio drama created in 1979. It features excellent acting, stereo sound effects, and a full musical score from the London Symphony.

Adventures in Odyssey A Christian radio drama produced by Focus On The Family. Speaking of "Focus On The Family", check out their Radio Theatre site, where you can purchase CDs and tapes of various stories adapted for radio, such as the "Chronicles of Narnia" series by C.S. Lewis.
Left Behind If you're a fan of this book series, I highly recommend checking out the dramatic audio edition. The sound effects and music are excellent, as is the acting.

Games

AudioGames.net is an excellent site where you can read about nearly every audio-based game available. As the name implies, an "audio game" is a game that uses sound only, no graphics. This site also contains articles, a forum where you can discuss audio-based games, etc.
Another excellent resource for accessible computer games is Phil Vlasak's "Fantastic Games and Where To Find Them".
If you're interested in playing, or even creating, text adventure games, also called Interactive Fiction, The Interactive Fiction Archive has everything you need. Because it's a big site, you may like to visit Baf's Guide to The IF Archive, which features various listings of games in a variety of genres.
Miriani is a science fiction MOO (a form of an online text adventure game similar to a MUD, or Multi-User Dungeon). The game allows you to try different things to earn money. For instance, you can salvage space debris, haul asteroids, go on missions, etc. In addition to reading the help section at the above link, I also recommend visiting Liam Erven's Miriani Page, where you'll find all the files you'll need to get started. These include MonkeyTerm, a MUD client which you'll need to play the game, scripts for JAWS, and a cool sound pack.

Internet Radio Stations

This section contains links to stations that broadcast exclusively on the Internet. If you're interested in finding commercial stations that broadcast online, I recommend visiting Mike's Radio World and Bill Sparks' Radio Look-Up Page.
Note that while you can listen to the majority of these stations on a dial-up connection, they sound significantly better on broadband. Also, I've only provided links to a station's website, rather than streaming links, since they can change without notice.

ACB Radio A network of five Internet stations run by the American Council of the Blind. The channels are:

ACB Radio Mainstream features talk shows produced by blind people, as well as the very popular Main Menu technology show. An archive of shows is also available for on-demand listening.

ACB Radio Cafe features a mix of music by blind artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Doc Watson, Terry Kelly, etc.

The ACB Radio Treasure Trove features only the best old-time radio shows, courtesy of The Radio Entertainment Network.

ACB Radio Interactive features a variety of live and interactive request shows by blind and visually impaired broadcasters from around the world.

ACB Radio World features music and programming in languages other than English, as well as coverage of live events.

AfterhoursDJs All live DJs, all the time! Features various types of dance music.

Audio Book Radio If you enjoy audio books, you'll like this station. It features popular audio books by best-selling authors, as well as works from new and unsigned writers.

Miscellaneous Links

NASA TV is a neat TV channel from NASA that broadcasts online. It features various educational programs about NASA's activities, space, etc., and also broadcasts live events such as space shuttle missions, complete with commentary from Mission Control and transmissions from the astronauts.
Wikipedia is an open-source online encyclopedia, meaning that people can edit any of the articles in case there are, for example, corrections. It's one of my favorite sites, as I like to look up different things, including games and movie titles. There's a lot of neat information to be found here. Highly recommended and addictive!
GetRight is an excellent download manager that allows you to resume the downloading of files. There is a free trial version that lets you use the program for as long as you want, but some nag messages will appear when you download files from time to time. I'm not sure if this will work in the free version, but with the registered version, GetRight can replace the standard file download dialog from your browser. The advantage of this is that you can download and resume files on sites that don't link directly to a file, but instead go through a PHP system or something. It even works on secure sites.
If you like listening to international radio stations, check out The World Radio Network. This is a radio service that broadcasts programming from international shortwave stations, like Radio Canada, Radio Austria International, etc. There are two networks you can choose from, and you can listen to them either with a satellite dish, or via the Internet. WRN1 is the English-only channel, which carries English programming from various International broadcasters. WRN2 is the Multilingual channel for North American listeners. Archived programs are also available.
The Audio Bible allows you to listen to the King James version of the Bible as narrated by Alexander Scourby, who read the bible onto talking book records in the 50's. You can also find information on how to get the Audio Bible on one CD-ROM, or on regular cassettes and CD's. The site is easy to use, and is designed for the visually impaired. Simply select the part of the bible you want to listen to, select a chapter, and you'll instantly hear the complete text of that chapter. Real Audio is required.
